Red couplets adorned doorways, written with poetic verses to invoke good fortune, while red envelopes (“hongbao”) filled with wishes for prosperity were passed between loved ones, and the crackle of firecrackers once signaled the driving away of evil spirits and the welcoming of a bright new year.
